HIGH SCHOOL
Once your student has progressed to the high school level, we will work with your student to help them achieve their goal which goes far beyond the high school classroom. We offer classical education with a hands on approach all the way through 12th. We will accept 48 students into the high school keeping a 12:1 ratio. Whether you are confident in your high school path or needing help navigating course schedules, Vo-Tech, concurrent enrollment, transcripts, or ACT prep, we are here to help each student on their unique path! Our staff are seasoned with years of experience working with high school students and are ready to help yours achieve their goals. Those that choose concurrent enrollment will have the option to enroll online at a local university while receiving in person instruction at the Lab School. We are not just here to prepare the road for your child but your child for the road!
Science in High School 2021-2024
Below are descriptions of some the science courses that may be covered in our high school curriculum over the next few years to give an idea of what we teach. Please email us for information on others. We reserve the right to change the order in which these are taught to best meet the needs of all of our students.
Biology
This is a full and complete overview of biology. It will prepare any student taking the ACT; they’ll have all they need to know of the biological sciences. Students completing this course will be prepared for any biology courses they take at the college level. In conjunction with their Student Notebook, the textbook helps students become scientifically literate citizens. There are basic things everyone should know about how our world functions. This course will give students the strong foundation they need to make informed decisions about their lives, whether or not they continue in the sciences. The experiments come in three types: microscope labs, dissection labs, and household labs. Household labs use only common household equipment. The microscope labs, however, require a microscope and several prepared and blank slides, while the dissection labs require an additional dissection kit with specimens. This course will provide your student with all requirements for one high school lab science and is rigorous in nature. Your student will not only become scientifically literate but will, by default learn to manage his/her time and many beneficial study techniques. Topics covered include:
Rhetoric:9th grade: Rhetoric Campanion
10th grade: Theology 11th grade: Theology 12th grade: Cap Stone |
Marine Biology
Marine Biology is a college-preparatory high school course for high school students. This course is rigorous and thorough. It is an upper-level high school course as it requires knowledge of general biology and assumes that students have previously participated in biological lab activities such as experiments, dissections, and microscopy. This is also one of the few science courses that include an entire education on ecology. This course will provide your student with all requirements for one high school lab science and is rigorous in nature. Your student will not only become scientifically literate but will, by default learn to manage his/her time and many beneficial study techniques. Topics covered include:
High School Astronomy
Astronomy is a high school level lab science which counts toward graduating credits. Students will be required to do outside of the classroom work as much star gazing and moon mapping can only happen at night.
Topics that may be covered are:

Anatomy and Physiology
DescriptionThis high school human body course covers both the anatomy and physiology of each of the human body’s organ systems for those students who have successfully completed high school biology and chemistry classes. When fully completed, this course can be listed as honors and/or an advanced course on high school transcripts. You can rest assured that the subject matter covered in this course is rigorous enough to prepare students for college-level work as it teaches how to completely fill out a lab sheet, observe and conduct an experiment and notate finding as well as study and prepare for any scientific exam. Please note that the reproductive system is covered in detail, including accurate yet respectful illustrations and descriptions. Both a male and female teacher will be present for this module.
This study will introduce the organizational levels of the human body from a single cell to the 11 major organ systems:

Some Books We May Read in High School for Literature Credit This Year.
This course continues the emphasis on the study of composition and literature through the study of authors and literature. The skills of thinking, reading, writing and speaking are further developed through the critical analysis of literature. This year's Language Arts builds on past years and continues to develop literary analysis, creative writing, research, and essay skills, with weekly writing assignments in a range of lengths and topics. We will also continue to build on our grammar in daily exercises and diagramming as well as dictation and journaling. Please see our 7th/8th grade page for a list of topics covered.

Classes will include activities for vocabulary, map work, comprehension, critical thinking, composition, research, and projects. We will also use video when available along with the primary source documents already provided. Tests will be given to assess knowledge of key facts and chronology, and will require students to use critical thinking skills such as making comparisons, synthesizing information, and drawing conclusions. |
Empires that ruled our world and what made them great? Why did they fall and what can we learn from them? How did they influence us? Why are they so fascinating and why are we constantly going back to them? These are some of the questions we will attempt to answer as we take a look at some the greatest empires the world has ever known. Your student will step back in time with us as we dissect these great empires, look at where they were, what they were and try to see where the signs were that pointed to their demise. Finally, we will look at ways we can learn from them and steps we can take as a nation to avoid the same fate.

High School Math
A Word About Saxon's Scope and Sequence:
All students are placed in the math that is best for their own development. No child will be left behind or forced to move beyond their capabilities.
We continue with Saxon Math at the Lab School in our High School Curricula. This year we will offer Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Advanced Math through Saxon. For children with dysgraphia or other learning disabilities, we offer alternatives that can be discussed in an one on one setting.
***Saxon also offers Geometry. This is new and not part of the original sequence written by John Saxon. This is because geometry is covered adequately by Jon Saxon in the Algebra 1 and 2 books that we use. We teach all students as if they are college bound in the area of math or science. Therefore, we teach Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Math, and Calculus and your geometry is then covered by the content found in these texts.
